PRODUCT ENGINEERING / 5 MIN READ

Useful software starts outside the codebase

Before architecture, interface, or implementation, there is a workflow in the real world. That is where product engineering begins.

Start with the work

A request for software often arrives as a feature list. The more useful starting point is the sequence of decisions, handoffs, constraints, and exceptions behind that list.

Software becomes valuable when its structure matches the work people are actually trying to do.

Map decisions, not screens

Screens are outputs. Begin by identifying what someone needs to know, decide, provide, or confirm at each step. The right interface tends to follow from that model.

Build the smallest coherent system

Small does not mean careless. A coherent first version has clear boundaries, dependable behavior, and enough observability to learn what should happen next.
